Nausea During Pregnancy
Try to avoid exposure to odors, food, or supplements that trigger nausea. Common triggers are fatty or spicy foods. You may find it helpful to eat small amounts of food several times a day and drink fluids between meals. Try eating bland, dry, and high-protein foods.
It's recommended that you take Vitamin B6 and doxylamine. These are available over the counter and are safe throughout pregnancy.
- Vitamin B6 – take 10 to25 mg by mouth every 8 hours
- Doxylamine (Unisom) – take 25 mg by mouth at bedtime, 12.5 mg in the morning, and 12.5 mg in the afternoon as needed (may cause drowsiness)
Ginger also is safe to take and available over the counter. Try the tasteless capsules
- Ginger extract 125 to 250 mg by mouth every 6 hours (may cause heartburn)
- Ginger powder (from the spice isle): mix 1/4 teaspoon with a small amount of milk and take every 6 hours as needed
There are several prescription medications that are also safe during pregnancy. Please talk to your doctor if the above remedies aren't helping.
